ROKR Velociraptor is a spring-powered mechanical wooden puzzle from the Prehistoric Planet series. The 3D wooden puzzle builds into an open-frame dinosaur model with visible gears and moving legs. Its wind-up mechanism powers two-legged motion without batteries, so the finished model remains functional after assembly instead of serving only as a static display.

Velociraptor Build Profile

As a DIY wooden model, Velociraptor is a medium-difficulty project with 189 pieces and an estimated 2.5-hour assembly time. The wooden model kit uses a three-dimensional build rather than a flat puzzle format, with layered parts forming the body, limbs, tail, and internal mechanism as assembly progresses.

Spring Drive

Four-Stage Gear Transmission

A wind-up key tensions the spring mechanism, while a four-stage gear transmission transfers stored energy to the legs. Once released, the model moves on two feet. The gear system remains visible through the open body structure, making the mechanical layout easy to inspect after the model has been assembled.

Hind Legs

Crankshaft Hind-Leg System

Velociraptor’s hind-leg system uses a crankshaft design, metal springs positioned behind the feet, and rubber pads underneath. The springs simulate tendon function, while the pads provide traction and cushioning on a smooth surface. An S-shaped tail counterbalances the heavier front section as the model moves in a bipedal stance.

Part Assembly

Mortise-and-Tenon Construction

This wooden construction kit combines plywood and plastic components. Laser-cut wooden parts connect through a mortise-and-tenon system, so glue is not required for the main assembly. Numbered pieces correspond with illustrated instructions, helping you track orientation and placement as the frame, limbs, gears, and exterior details come together.

Wind-Up Motion

Flat-Surface Operation

The model is intended to move on a flat, smooth surface. Before winding, lock the gears with the switch; after tensioning the spring, place the model down and release the switch to start the motion. Carpet, gravel, and other rough or uneven surfaces are not suitable for operation.

Finished Form

Dimensions and Exterior Details

Fully assembled, the model measures 415 × 105 × 210 mm. The finished model has an extended S-shaped tail, open skeletal body, amber eye details, front claws, and rows of teeth. Much of the gear and leg mechanism remains exposed, so the mechanical components stay visible as part of the finished dinosaur design.
